snag eoga golf academyMany life skills are developed in the learning of golf, such as focus and concentration, competitiveness and self-discipline, as well as etiquette, self-esteem and realizing the value of hard work. We start imparting these skills to children as young as 3years of age in our SNAG programme. This is when the development of hand-eye and ball co-ordination is crucial and is applicable to not only golf, but many other sports. The SNAG programme is therefore recognised as the best long-term athlete development golf programme available. This is a programme packed with various activities to keep the youngster entertained and emphasis is fun-based learning.

This platform appeals to the youngsters sense of achievement, encourages competitiveness and they learn the value of hard work in a reward system of brightly coloured keys, caps and balls. This is also when they start learning etiquette, respect, good manners and self-discipline. The programme goes hand-in-hand with the WPGA which introduces the youngsters to tournaments in a fun and unintimidating environment.

This morning the guys had some FlightScope data collected on the range and then had their swing videoed. Dan spent quality time with each golfer after having analysed their swing. It appears, as with everything in life, that the difference between good golf and great golf is all about the lack of belief in our ability to hit that great shot, or our inhibitions when trying something new. Dan is certainly very inspirational with a wicked sense of humour.

After lunch the group headed to the short game area where the instruction was "How to Use the Bounce of the Wedge". This has been an action packed day crammed with some valuable information and motivation from this world renown instructor.

We are proud to be involved with the Reddam golf squad, who have just returned home after a long weekend of terrific golf in the Oakhill Golf Festival.

Sunday saw the launch of the first WPGA tournament for all youngsters aged between 5 and 13 years and for some, this was the first time they had played a full 9 hole round (albeit on a somewhat shortened course - which made the event a lot of fun, especially for the young beginners).

WPGAThe first of 9 tournaments scheduled for this year, was held at Steenberg Golf Course on a perfect afternoon. Registration opened at 1:30 and soon a queue of excited youngsters with parents in tow were registering at the WPGA (Western Province Golf Academy) gazebo for the short 5SK clinic prior to the official sponsors, Grindrod Asset Management welcome and address.

Tee - off was from 3pm with each golfer "employing" the service of a parent as caddie, so this was really a great opportunity for having some quality fun time together.

Deborah Martin, Director of Junior GolfWestern Province Golf Union arrived to offer her support and encouragement and was hosted by Etienne Olivier, whilst EOGA coaches, Dave Gerhardi, Darryn Pitout, Adrian Raath and Peter Little, WPGA representative ensured everything ran according to plan.

We take a unique approach to recognition in this Academy. Each golfer received a cap on registration yesterday and for each achievement on the course (Birdies, Bogeys, Eagles, Pars clinics attended and tournaments played) a star to clip on the cap, is awarded. At the end of the year Titleist South Africa will be sponsoring the year end prize.

EOGA wishes to thank all the young golfers for their participation, for their exemplary behaviour and the faultless application of great golfing etiquette. A big thank you to all the fans (aka moms and dads), for their support and participation and the official sponsor, Grindrod Asset Management.

If there are any other young golfers who have not yet registered with WPGA (open to all youngsters in Western Province and do not need to be affiliated to EOGA or Steenberg) please contact David Gerhardi on 021 7121346 or david@eoga.co.za.

We are going all out this holiday to offer our juniors an action-packed holiday programme.

These Hoërskool Nico Malan youngsters from the Eastern Cape, on golf tour with their teacher, Albie Loubser (and their rugby team) spent Thursday, 2nd April with our golf professionals in a jam-packed coaching programme. Their day started at The GolfLab and included a session of important warm-up routines with Golf Body Institute, followed by a high-tech putting lesson on the SAM PuttLAB, where all the statistics were emailed through to the parents for scrutiny on their arrival back home.

After their morning session (for more information, see the post below), they headed back to Steenberg for an hour lesson in Effective Bunker play, followed by lunch. The afternoon was spent on the course with coach Dave Gerhardi, offering some assistance and tips during their 18 holes.

There is some serious talent in this group and we thank them for coming to spend the day with us and trust that they enjoyed their time with us and we look forward to welcoming Albie and his young golfers back next year.

(For further photographs taken by the photographer, employed for the afternoon, please email Pietie Loubser or anita@eoga.co.za).

Cape Town - On Saturday, February 1, ably assisted by the entire Golf Operations team, Steenberg’s Director of Golf, Ian Kennedy, and six other Steenberg PGA professionals played golf in a relay style format from 06:00 to 18:00.

This formidable team of young gentlemen played 321 holes and raised an impressive R160 000 for the iThemba House Trust. This was eight holes more than their previous record and is also their highest recorded monetary total so far.

This year, Kennedy challenged Dave Usendorff and his team from The Els Club at Copperleaf but as the air is a little thinner in the Highveld, Dave and his pro’s have an extra two weeks to prepare themselves until their turn on Saturday, February 15. The challenge is to see who can raise the most money and play the most holes in the allotted 12 hours and although it is a “challenge” the ultimate winner is charity. The intention of the challenge is to donate more funds for others and Kennedy is likely to expand the challenge each year and next year is looking at a team in KwaZulu-Natal.

Lisa Kowen

A huge congratulations to Lisa Kowen for her impressive win of the Steenberg Golf Club Ladies Championships. Lisa led the field after day one on Thursday and cinched her victory in hectic winds yesterday - making her a true champion!

As soon as the results were out, coach Quintin van der Berg came rushing from a lesson to congratulate Lisa.

Well done Lisa from everyone at EOGA and well done to all the ladies who played in the club champs. The weather conditions made great play very difficult indeed.

1. We have unfortunately had to review our rates for 2014/15. This increase was necessary due to a number of economic reasons, but mainly due to the fact that we have invested in some really awesome training swing aids and in the process of purchasing a FlightScope all of which enhances your learning and experience at the Academy.

2. By now many of you have received an invoice and/or statement from our new accounting software. The computer generated emails carrying the invoice as an attachment, all have a link which when clicked on, takes you to the "Customer Zone" on the Sage Pastel website where you are able to view your account in more detail. I am asking the developers to have this link put onto the Statement Email, so that the invoices do not need to be emailed out and hope this system is more convenient and meaningful than the last system we had.

Noel Anderson helped Western Province to a 7.5 - 4.5 victory against Ekurhuleni in the 3rd round of SA U19 Inter-Provincial at Krugersdorp Golf Club on Wednesday.

Noel says he had to fight hard for his 2 & 1 win. He led 2 up through 12, but Chris van Tonder made successive birdies on the 13th and 14th to level the game. They both parred 15, but Noel won the 16th with a birdie and was on the 18th green for 2. Chris caught the fairway bunker and he couldn't up-and-down for par. What an exciting finish.

Well done Noel - some things are worth fighting for!

etienne olivier golf academy junior campAs the summer holidays draw to an end, these youngsters (aged between 7 and 10years) joined us for a 2 day clinic. The first day was spent with some putting drills and disciplines. Celia Glasser displayed a huge amount of concentration and tenacity with a very difficult drill and Nicolo Marolda blew us away with his consistently accurate long shots. Overall, some excellent putting from these youngsters.

Steve Raath from Etienne Olivier Golf Academy does it again!

Steve Raath and Nic Pithey did us proud at the Glacier Junior Series held at Fancourt this past weekend when Steve went on to win the A Division with an impressive 73 Gross and 71 Nett. Not far behind on the scoreboard was Nic Pithey with a 80 Gross and 76 Nett. Guys, we are incredibly proud of you!

As golfers, we all want to know what makes us hit the ball the best, what are the most important features that a good golf swing should consist of. A comprehensive study of the Top Golfers around the world revealed that they all had 5 things in common which have been named The 5 Swing Keys

Etienne recently returned from the USA where he attended an Instructor’s course in Orlando, Florida and qualified as Director of Instruction for 5 Simple Swing Keys System. In the next few weeks we will be looking at each one of these Keys. If you are able to recognize that you lack some of these keys, then you are already in the process of becoming a better golfer.

This methodology of teaching is by far the simplest way of giving golf lessons and carrying over information in a non-technical, constructive way. The Professionals at the Academy have really enjoyed this style of teaching and we are sure those of you who are currently working on any of these keys, are really enjoying yourselves.

Here are the 5 keys that are essential to play good golf:
1) Steady Head
2) Weight Forward
3) Flat Left Wrist
4) Diagonal Sweet-spot Path
5) Club Face

… and the First Cap and Key awarded in the 5SK Tigers programme goes to Jake McLeroth!

It was an exciting afternoon at the Academy yesterday when young Jake McLeroth passed the Steady Head (aka Key 1) tests with flying colours to be the first youngster to be awarded the Green Cap in this internationally recognised golf programme. Dad, Greg McLeroth was here to support Jake and it was a proud moment for Dad as Jake was congratulated by Etienne.
Jake heads off to Fancourt for a golf-packed holiday next week and we wish him and Greg, Happy Golfing.

Once again our Juniors are making us proud. There seems to be no end to their recent achievements! Yesterday was Round 1 of the Junior League and Steenberg was represented by Steve Raath, Daniel Heneck, Gordy and Miles Beckenstrater, Ameer Tyer and Connor Whiting. They drew Bellville in the first round, which has a very strong side and includes Michael Sherriff who came 7th in SA Boys. Well, Steve took Michael head on to win 3 plus 2. Ameer won his game against Nathan Botha, Daniel halved his game against Jaco van der Merwe and the youngster of the team, Miles Beckenstrater chipped in to win against Francois Roux leading the Steenberg team to a 3 and a half to 2 and a half win. Unfortunately we don't have any pics to share with you today, but we will report back next week on Round 2 against Durbanville at Durbanville on 7th July.
